A X(10) is not perfection. A X(10) was meant to be broken. Because you can do better. Because rules don't apply. Greatness is? Not defined by achieving a predetermined mark. Greatness is? Defined by achieving...the previously unknown. Make. Your. Own. Mark. History will be written. Will your name be there?

AXIAL No.1 is the second studio edition print made available from the design studio of SHOCKJOY™. While the central AXIAL lettering was initially designed & intended to be used as part of a larger tshirt graphic, one piece of tracing paper led to another design study sketch and felt the design was better utilized on paper rather than cotton. Each 4-color offset print on 100# uncoated text is indvidually signed and numbered.

An all original, retro-geometric, spinning record inspired seven color screen print on black & white ringer tee (entry was not submitted). Ordered and intertwined complexity serve as the primary inspiration throughout the composition and guided by two main emblem graphic elements and two THE GLITCH MOB custom lettering elements. To sweeten things up a bit, a hint of g-l-i-t-c-h was added at each compositing stage.
The Glitch Mob is an electronic music group comprised of three members -- Boreta, Ooah, and edIT.

The little 'RP' monogram-like element (unrelated to the ERSOLIGN studies) in the lower right-hand corner of the page was inked in to cover up a bleed through of a 'CONAP' sketch from the previous page. Always make sure your back-up sheet of paper is in the right place before inking! Happy accidents aren't really all that bad. Some are simply better than others.

As with each of the previous two Possi Impossi releases, an emblem graphic featuring the P & I and a custom lettering element serve as the foundation from which all album art is conceived and ultimately composed. By limiting the composition palette to three colors (black, gray, orange), the subtle interplay of their geometry is strengthened and distinguished by the white space filtering within. The 5 minute single ‘Choo-Choo Bobby Woo Furgtalson’ marks Possi Impossi’s third release and is the first in a number of forthcoming digital only singles. Track mastered by TWERK.

The SHOCKJOY™ identity was developed with a heavy emphasis on lettering, balancing the need for both aesthetics & readability. Three variations were created from the primary SHOCKJOY™ lettering mark, allowing for up to four different yet uniquely united marks, with the mark applicability dependant upon use:
1. monogram; (formed by the 'C-K-J' string)
2. primary lettering mark; ('SHOCKJOY')
3. monogram + primary lettering mark; ('CKJ' + 'SHOCKJOY')
4.primary lettering mark / enlarged monogram; ('SHOCKJOY' / 'CKJ')

LOG put out an open call for designers to compose a postcard image with a supplemental 100 word maximum cover story for their non-thematic 18th issue. The transient, experience-by-mail nature of a postcard serves as a sort of anti-image display medium in a profession (of architecture) whose aim is to successfully seduce & persuade agency, client, & public opinion of a design proposal via imagery. A design produced by the mind should hold greater worth than the outward appearance of an individual. As the entry suggests, each letter (with exception of the bowtie ‘I’) is designed as a specific pattern for use as a paper template for the cutting out and assembling of a larger garment – perhaps even a suit?

Alex Bec and Will Hudson, directors of the online design community and print magazine It's Nice That posed a question as part of their If You Could print design series. The question you ask? If you could do anything tomorrow, what would it be? My response you ask? RELAX! Entries were to be designed as a double page spread in the format of a diary, while still allowing for each page to be used for its intended function. 52 entries were chosen (mine was not) -- one unique design each spread, for each week of the year.

SHIFT, an international creative culture focused online magazine based in Japan, called upon designers to design their own version of the SHIFT logo and logo mark. 485 entries were submitted from 40 different countries. One winner & 19 excellent works were selected. Thus, a 0.2% chance of claiming the top prize. Neither of the entries I submitted placed. 100+ freehand sketches were done on various paper stocks & in various ink types and colors. Out of those 100, two versions would ultimately shape the final type-based mark and a complimentary logo-based mark originating from the 'S' lettering geometry. A red circular disk functions as a crossbar to the H. This is a symbolic homage paid to Japan's national flag; the red disk represents the sun.

SHIFT, an international creative culture focused online magazine based in Japan, have called upon artists and designers every year since 2003 to create a piece for their calendar competition. 1267 entries were submitted from 49 different countries, but only 12 works of art were chosen for inclusion into the printed calendar, with one image chosen for each month of the year. My entry was not selected. Coming from an architectural background, it was nice to freely explore 3D object creation of non-building form.

A flexible identity system was developed for the A.X.I.A.L.™ brand tee shirt clothing line. It is the acronym for A X(10) Is Always Limiting™. A.X.I.A.L.™ is dedicated to creating inspiring graphic tees for those just as passionate in their own life pursuits and adventures.
While the flagship of the brand is anchored by a polygonal wireframe-like trademark, alternate, more playful & animate versions emerge from the voided framework thereby metaphorically eluding to and suggestive of an individual's empowering drive to inspire others by their own actions, adventures, or pursuits.

Sometimes you just have to be there to know what it's like. The double-bass kick pulsating through your body. Dualing guitars. Screeching vocals. Singers in a not-so-secret, on stage love affair with the microphone while fans & their loved ones look on in pure delight. Band members running around on stage as if they were being chased by their own worst enemy. Sometimes you just need a break between sets, to step outside and make sure your head is still attached. Because as the night goes on, it's likely to get even heavier.
